Rome in the 1970s, the Borghetti family has just moved into one of the many new residential complexes built in the Italian capital. Despite this recent move, to the top floor of a new apartment overlooking the entire city, Clara and Felice are no longer in love, but they can't seem to leave each other. Clara finds refuge from her loneliness by focusing on the special relationship she has with her three children. The eldest, Adriana, still unknown in this new neighborhood, deliberately presents herself as a boy to the children, which will push the bond that still holds the family together to a breaking point.
Angelegt im Italien der 1970er Jahre erzählt dieses bittere Familienmelodram von einem Klima der Unterdrückung, das sich aus Religion, bürgerlichen Werten und allgemeiner gesellschaftlicher Heuchelei zusammensetzt. Im Zentrum der Erzählung stehen zwei Hauptopfer: Die lebenslustige, aber dauernd gezähmte und dazu auch noch betrogene Mutter, gespielt von einer wunderbaren Penelope Cruz, und eine Teenager-Tochter, die nicht nur androgyn aussieht, sondern sich tatsächlich eher als Junge wahrnimmt – was in den siebzigern fast noch mehr als auf Ablehnung auf totale Ratlosigkeit stiess. Alle Fluchtversuche aus diesem Alltagskorsett scheitern. Am ehesten gelingt noch jener in die Showwelt des damaligen Schwarzweiss-TV. Ein kluger, recht eigenwilliger Film (so auch das Farbkonzept: fast alles ist rot oder grün), der weder rührselig noch oberflächlich oder gar klischiert ist, und auf jeden Fall nachwirkt.
